. 301 North Front Street The Renovation of the Bryant-Haislip House in Hamilton, NC Before and After, The Bryant Haislip House, Hamilton, North Carolina 2016-2021 The Bryant-Haislip house in the Fall of 2021 301 N Front St, Hamilton, NC, Home Renovatee Waldo, the Helper Please join us on this lovely wrap around porch painted in gray with walls of muted green, trim and columns in a light yellow and navy shutters. The front door, original, was faux painted over white to look like wood, while the side panels were marbelized in light blue and gold. A vinyl covering was applied to the beveled glass to provide privacy. Both a brass knocker and a ceramic Welcome sign were added. Front Hall ... Upon entering the home, one is greeted by the front entry hall with a "Tromp d'oeil" hand painted "rug" on the refinished original wooden flooring. It was painted by hand with five shades of green, yellow, and blue for the leaves with another six coats of polyurethane on top. Gentleman's Smoking Parlor ... To the north doorway from the hall is a large room most likely used a gentleman's smoking parlor with a refinished fireplace complete with Labradorite base. It is currently being used as a gallery. Ladies Parlor ... The front south formal room a bright and airy having three windows, east, south, and west facing, all original and reglazed. A crystal light fixture from the 1940's replaces the original 2 light fixture, later refinished and moved to the master bathroom with its twin that was in the original dining room. Refinished wood flooring. The rug has a William Morris design. Family Room ... formerly an uncovered boardwalk to the then-separate kitchen This comfortable den with travertine flooring and wooden wainscoat and chair rail was once an uncovered porch from the house to the detached kitchen. It is now used for TV, breakfast, and work space. Gourmet Kitchen ... View from kitchen sink Detail of tile around kitchen window An expecially handsome feature of the home is this gourmet kitchen boasting an Italian gas range with electric oven, pot filler and marble topped island. Granite countertops in black, antique white cabinets, semi circular window, stainless steel sink, and travertine backsplash are some of the feattures that make this kitchen desirable. There is plenty of lighting to work by, including matching original 1920's fixtures that were refurbished and moved from their former location in the formal parlor and dining room. Master Bedroom Fireplace in Master Bedroom, ground floor. The master bedroom sits on the ground floor and has an ensuite master bath and attached sitting room/office. Master Office or Sitting Room Ensuite Master Bathroom ... formerly part of an uncovered boardwalk to the kitchen Master Bathroom - walk in shower has seat with independent nozzle and on/off valve, travertine floor, antique buffet as lavatory topped with black marble, wainscoating large mirror, double pedestal sinks, sliding glass shower door, attached closet. Shelving in master closet Guest Bedroom/Studio Workroom ... formerly the family eating room attached to kitchen This large room is attached to the kitchen and would have been the informal dining area for the family. However, we wanted two ground floor bedrooms each with private bath, one as a master and one as a guest bedroom, and so we used this space for the guest bedroom slash hobby room, complete with cozy fireplace (electric logs). The floor is painted wood and walls are insulated with an air flow passage to prevent rot. Guest Bathroom ... formerly part of an uncovered boardwalk to the separate kitchen When the house was built, the kitchen was separate from the main living area due to the chance of fire in the kitchen. This bathroom was added in the space between the house and the old kitchen which used to be open space. Vanity is vintage with a large storage area. Sink is a waterfall. Intricate tile in shower/tub was done by homeowner. Tub is original to house from about the 1940's and has been re-enameled. Half Bath off kitchen ... new construction In the "back 40" is this highly "wabbited" half bath with ornate vintage cabinet, gold ceramic sink, wainscoating and high baseboard, beveled mirror and three 1920's lights above the mirror. Laundry Room ... new construction The 8' x 10' laundry room is lined with handy shelving and cabinetry, a deep mop sink, and front loading washer and dryer in a metallic blue. A pantry is a great thing to have during a pandemic. Front Entry Hall with staircase to second level The home has three separate heating and air conditioning units. These double doors close off the front portion of the house which can save on electric and gas costs. The upstairs is on its own zoned system. Staircase decorated for Christmas, each step was painted a stripe of gold as a safety feature on its edge, the bottom one having a more frills design and then given six coats of polyurethane. Gold paint for safety Bedroom No.1 Upstairs ... with ensuite bathroom Bedroom No. 1 Upstairs has rebuilt fireplace using keystone for support and added dental detailing painted in a federal yellow with gray blue walls. Refinished flooring, ceiling fan, side by side windows and attached private bath. This upstairs room was smoked out and plaster was falling off the walls ... The house originally had three bedrooms upstairs with no bathrooms or closets upstairs. We took the middle bedroom, the one in this photo which had been smoked out and possibly burned, and divided it in half creating two bathrooms with attached closets. It's easy to identify the fireplace in this "before" photo with the "after" photo below. Bathroom No.1 Upstairs ... carved out of half of middle bedroom This custom sign was recently added above the fireplace. It is made from the remnants of the porch column bases all of which had to be replaced. The middle portion of the E is from the gingerbread work on the roof. Bedroom 2 Upstairs ... south side Bedroom No. 2 Upstairs has south and west facing windows, refinished floors, ceiling fan, attic access, and private access to bathroom and office/sitting room Crystal lighting in the study area for bedroom no. 2 (above) and lighting over the staircase (right) with red glass, original light fixture from another Hamilton home View from front bedroom window at sunset Bathroom 2 Upstairs ... carved out of half of middle bedroom Bathroom private to bedroom 2. A wall mural of ocean waves out of blue glass tiles and travertine; refinished original wood floor with six coats of polyurethane. Private bathroom for bedroom 2 with muraled shower. Sink wall is tiled with travertine. Ceiling is unpainted beadboard. The blue are arms of ocean water playing on travertine piano keys as denoted by the three - two - three - two abstract keys. The meaning is sound + waves = music, and music is the international language that will bring peace to the world. Thus, the mural signifies and is titled: "World Peace Cometh". It took about six months to complete and each piece was cut with a wet saw. The Throne The travertine is raised and beveled while the blue/green water is set slightly lower. Mid century bathroom decor, wainscoating, chair rail, 12 inch baseboards, crystal door knob. Dressing area with lighted wall mirror and full length mirror; Large walk-in closet and window brings in light. Chandelier hangs above. Toilet comes with bidet, toilet paper holder has spot for cell phone and keys. Medicine cabinet gives ample storage plus storage below sink.
